This study examines the impact of divorce on women in Mauritanian society, with a particular focus on divorced inmates at the Nouakchott Women’s Prison and the factors contributing to repeated criminal behavior. Divorce is a widespread social phenomenon whose consequences vary according to women’s cultural, economic, and social contexts. Drawing on relevant studies and field data, the research explores the extent to which divorce may act as a catalyst for vulnerability, potentially exposing some women to recurring involvement in criminal activities, especially in the absence of family and financial support. The findings indicate that divorced women lacking familial backing are more susceptible to exploitation and reoffending due to economic hardship and social marginalization, often resulting in re-incarceration. In contrast, women who maintain family connections and receive post-divorce support demonstrate greater stability and a higher likelihood of successful reintegration. The study highlights the importance of psychological assistance, professional empowerment, and structured social support mechanisms aimed at reducing cultural stigma and shifting societal perceptions toward divorced women. It concludes that sustainable reintegration strategies and the active inclusion of these women in social and economic life are essential to preventing recidivism and fostering long-term stability.
