Abstract

Recently, the phenomenon of migration has increased, particularly within Arab societies, for a variety of reasons. Wars, conflicts, poverty, and security disturbances afflicting Arab societies have pushed families and individuals to undertake successive forced or voluntary migrations, as the only refuge from the harsh reality. Migrants have been drawn to developed and prosperous countries and societies, both Arab and foreign, with high hopes of enjoying a comfortable life. However, they soon faced the problem of identity and economic and social integration in host societies. The study aimed to address the complex issues associated with migration, focusing on the issue of identity and the social and economic integration of migrants in host societies. It also aimed to identify the most important challenges facing migrants, both individually and collectively, particularly in achieving harmony between their parent identity and the new identity of the migrants. It also identified the most significant difficulties facing this integration reality, while highlighting the most important factors that contribute to achieving optimal social and economic integration. It also reviewed some of the theories that explain integration and outlined the most important strategies that enable migrants to adapt optimally to host societies. One of the most important findings of the study is that immigrants suffer from psychological struggles resulting from their attempts to maintain their original identity and adapt to the identity of their new society, leading to what is known as a "fragmented identity." The study also revealed that limited language skills, societal discrimination, the confinement of immigrants to low-wage sectors, and discrimination in employment opportunities are among the most significant obstacles to achieving significant integration and participation in the social and economic life of host societies.
